With over two million inhabitants, Nagoya is Japan's fourth most populated city. It is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and the principal city of the Nobi plain, one of Honshu's three large plains and industrial centers.

Nagoya occupies a total area of  326.45 sq.km making it as the third largest incorporated city. Primarily a low lying area, the highest point in Nagoya is 198.30 m above the ground, while the lowest point in the ground is -1.73 m.

Nagoya lies on the Pacific coast in the Chuuba region. It is situated at a distance of over 350 kilometers from Tokyo and from the other important cities like Shinkansen and Osaka are one hour and two hours respectively.

The Nagoya belt forms the Nobi Plane that is considered one of the most fertile places in Japan. Three large rivers course across Nagoya; there are few smaller rivers as well.
Nagoya's area may be divided into 185 sq. km of privately owned area, 17 sq. km of agricultural land and 143 sq. km of agricultural.

Demography
As of May 1, 2008, Nagoya City has a population of 2,243,564 while its daytime population reaches 2,516,196. 

Economy and Culture
Greater Nagoya, centralized in Nagoya City, is the hub of Japanese manufacturing industries, producing over 40% of major manufacturing categories such as automobiles, automobile parts, machine tools and aircraft parts, and exerts its role as a strong leader in the Japanese economy.

The GDP of Greater Nagoya accounts for about 1% of the world's economy.
Compared with the GDP of other nations around the world, the GDP of Greater Nagoya ranks number 17!

Greater Nagoya also accounts for 10.7% of GDP in Japan, and 70% of that figure comes from Aichi-Nagoya area.

Weather
Nagoya's proximity to the Pacific Ocean has resulted in its experiencing a pleasant weather most time in the year, except during the months of January and February when it receives snow. The hottest month in Nagoya is August when the temperature reaches the over 35 degree centigrade. January is the coldest month, the temperature in this month dips precariously below the freezing point.

Nagoya receives rainfall most time of the year; it is most rainy during the month of June and September. The average temperature for Nagoya is 15.7 centigrade, with a maximum temperature of 36.7 centigrade and a minimum of -3.1 centigrade. As far as tourist season is concerned, Nagoya may be visited anytime of the year barring the snowing season.

Nagoya as a coastal city is vulnerable to the many natural disasters. The last disaster was the Ise Bay Typhoon in 1959.
